Volunteering is defined as a general set of activities, developed by individuals, consciously organized, and focused mainly on supporting the disadvantaged, which impact a community or its individual members. The requirements for becoming a volunteer are:

  1. Altruism and solidarity.
  2. Freedom of choice; that is, there is no personal obligation or legal duty.
  3. That it be carried out without pay or monetary compensation, other than costs incurred by the voluntary activity itself.
  4. That it be developed through private or public organizations and within specific programs/projects.
